Successful practices are based on experience and input from owners, neighbors, and homebuilders. We believe that utilizing these practices can help address issues before they become problems.

- Communicate, greet, and speak with residents whenever possible
- At the site, post a contact person’s name, phone number, and email address
- Respond to inquiries, suggestions and complaints as quickly as possible
- Know building codes and regulations pertaining to work in the neighborhood and ensure that subcontractors adhere to them
- Plan work in consideration of the effect on the neighborhood
- Respect residents’ opinions and property throughout construction
- Respect the aesthetics of the neighborhood
- Protect existing trees when possible
- Plant new trees and other landscaping
- Maintain a secure and safe work site with the safety of residents, particularly children, as an absolute priority
- Whenever possible, locate temporary toilets and dumpsters to minimize impact on the neighborhood
- Anticipate unexpected events; ask a neighbor or other local resource to contact you immediately in the event of fire, vandalism, wind damage, etc.
- Manage material storage to maintain pedestrian walkways
- Coordinate parking to minimize restrictions to traffic flow
- Ensure compliance with all applicable noise regulations

- Know building codes, regulations, and neighborhood covenants that apply to new construction and remodeling in your neighborhood
- Plan work in consideration of the effect on the neighborhood
- Respect neighbors’ opinions
- Consider the aesthetics of the neighborhood
- Work with an architect and builder sensitive to building in established neighborhoods
- Consider the impact on trees when planning work
- Plant new trees and other landscaping
- Ensure your builder maintains a secure and safe work site with the safety of neighbors, particularly children, as an absolute priority
- Communicate to your builder the importance of maintaining an orderly and professional job site at all times
- Where practical, ask your builder to complete exterior work as soon as possible

- Communicate directly with the owner or builder as soon as possible if you have a concern or question regarding specific construction or remodeling
- Know building codes, regulations, and neighborhood covenants that apply to new construction and remodeling in your neighborhood
- Communicate to the builder any concerns regarding work in progress
- Cooperate with the builder to speed up completion of work
- Respect your neighbor’s right to improve their property in accordance with their family’s needs and preferences
- Understand that some trees may have to be removed when a home is built or remodeled, and encourage builders to plant new trees
- Work sites can have visible and unseen dangers; never enter a work site without the express permission of the builder or owner, and make sure children understand they should never enter a work site
- Contact the builder immediately in the event of noise violations, excessive trash, fire, vandalism, wind damage, etc.
- Wait until construction is completed and landscaping is completed before passing judgment on a home and how it fits with others in the neighborhood
- Be patient. Construction can be disruptive, but realize that your home and every other home in the neighborhood were under construction at one time.
- Remember that when construction is completed, it will provide a home for your new neighbors and their family; your relationship with your new neighbors begins during construction
- Communicate any specific concern or question regarding new construction or remodeling in your neighborhood to your neighborhood association
