ENERGY EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTS IN NEW CONSTRUCTION
Construction methods and materials are more energy efficient today than in years past. Here are some examples:
- NAHB Model Green Building Guilines
- Roof shingles are more durable, reducing maintenance costs and extending product life.
- Double-paned windows made with low E glass and filled with argon gas insulate better and reduce air infiltration.
- Windows feature composite framing materials that minimize temperature transfer.
- Oriented Strand Board used for wall, floor, and roof sheathing is stronger, more durable, and uses recyclable lumber by-products.
- Toilets use less water.
- Plumbing fixture aerators reduce water use and minimize leaks.
- Recycled exterior materials, such as synthetic trim and plastic manufactured decking, reduce reliance on chemically treated lumber.
- Appliances such as refrigerators are typically three times as efficient as in the past, thanks to more insulation, advanced compressors, better door seals, and more accurate temperature controls.
- Energy Star appliances such as hot water heaters, dishwashers, clothes washers, and dryers save an average of 30% over standard models.
- Factory built components such as trusses and doors are constructed of recycled lumber by-products that optimize lumber use and reduce waste.
- HVAC systems are sized more exactly, saving money and operating efficiently at 80 - 90% high efficiency ratings.
- Insulation in new homes has high R-ratings that exceed minimum County requirements.
- Fiber cement and vinyl siding are more durable and minimize air infiltration.
- Air infiltration barriers reduce energy consumption.
- Concrete provides a more durable foundation.
- Plastic plumbing pipe uses recycled materials.
